Grealish, Sterling and Shaw should have all been taking pens before Saka, Sancho and Maguire (even if his pen was the best).

If those players have shit out, then they can fuck off. But judging by Southgate taking the previous England captain off the pitch before the pens are taken, I wouldn’t put it past him to have asked them to take pens just because they are attacking players.

Donnarumma would have bankrupted Milan by the end of his career

😂

After Mino Raiola got that 1 million euros per year contract for Donnarumma's older brother, I became a huge Raiola fan. I mean, the man is a genious, you have to admire his skills. 😂

But they have experience at penalties, no? Rashford takes them for Man Utd?

It's not on his head for how the players take the penalties

I'm not totally absolving Southgate of the game, by the way. I'm just saying he can't be hounded on once the penalty takers are chosen. If those players have stepped up and shown the confidence to Southgate that he wants to take one, then what else can he do? Put someone in place that is less confident? What kind of management would that be?

Rashford not so much, but Sancho on for Henderson? Really?

Penalties are rigorously trained in training during knockout tournaments. I’m finding it difficult to believe this was all reactive from Southgate. And I don’t particularly rate the man.

He’s the manager, it’s absolutely on his head how this shootout went. Taking off two experienced players right at the end, giving two of the first 5 pens to lads who have very little experience at this level is absolute madness.

Perhaps.. but would you have fancied Henderson? Walker? Sterling?

Henderson was picking out front row seats in open play..

I can't remember Grealish taking one for Villa, which probably suggests it ain't his speciality.

I was struggling more than ever to see 5 scorers at any stage.

From how Southgate describes being the 6th taker back at Euro 96 & Trippier being set piece specialist at Russia 2018, I suspect it was who seemed keen, who put their hands up.

Chuffed for Roberto

I told my gf that the players coming on were to take penalties, and that I thought Rashford would do something silly, and that I'd bring on DCL instead.
And so it passed. Rashford should hang his head, Sancho and Saka took some dogshit pens, but can hardly be blamed. I can't believe Saka took that pen, outrageous.

It's not coming home. Hopefully next tournament England get some real competition early days.

Southgate’s taken us to a final when we thought we’d not make it past the round of 16 and you lot are moaning about penalty takers. Clearly something that they’ve worked out in advance and the one thing that didn’t come off for us this tournament.

So all of a sudden, we are to believe that both Henderson and Walker have become shithouse pen takers overnight?

Maybe Sancho was pinging them in for fun in training, but are you really taking a player like Henderson off the pitch for him? The man has so much experience. I just find it mad.

Agreed, you want your Alpha males that can walk up to the spot with their chest puffed out, regardless of penalty taking technique. Sergio Ramos missed some terrible pens but he walked up everytime because he has the mindset of a winner, I think Hendo has that as well

Well fuck. I'll probably type more tomorrow but well done to Italy who have been excellent for most of the tournament.

Still more proud than gutted. And a big shout out to Jordan Pickford who has had a great tournament for the most part and vitally kept the tedious T-Rex arms meme brigade quiet for the whole tournament. They might even have to think of a new joke three years down the line.

But he just missed in that friendly? What’s to say he himself threw himself out of discussion? Has Walker ever taken a pen?

Also, if Henderson took one and missed, people will likely blame Southgate for having him take one with ‘his confidence low’ or something in that regard. There’s a lot to blame on Southgate but I can’t find this one of them without context.

The man has just proven himself again and again against criticism to be such a leader, never in my life did I think England could win a major competition and for a moment in that penalty shoot out I thought it might happen.

Also people talking about where’s Sancho/Rashford when he brought Saka on as if Saka hasn’t been one of our best players.

We are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

I am mostly annoyed at Saka being asked to take one of those penalties, and I almost refuse to believe that the likes of Grealish shied away from taking one, he nodded his heading confidently in the huddle when Southgate pointed to him.

Henderson is a leader, that much cannot be denied by anybody and there not a chance in hell that he’s said to Southgate that he’s low in confidence, he isn’t that sort of man. He would have taken the first one if Southgate had pointed at him.

Unlucky England, nearly but not quite. I felt Southgate was a bit negative in his approach. Either way, no shame in losing to the best side in the competition. On a side not over the course of the semi final and the final. Kane and Sterling performed some of the most blatant cheating and diving I've seen in recent years. It was literally non-stop over 2 games.

Jordan Henderson missed his last penalty, for England for fucks sake. Club loyalty really is a fucking parasite isn't it. Quite rightly wasn't anywhere near the shootout.

Pack it in you donut. It’s not blind club loyalty is it? Think Henderson has proven plenty in his career as both Liverpool AND England captain to suggest he would have held his nerve a bit better taking the final pen than a 19 year old lad.
