Alberto Aquilani for Xabi Alonso?

Balotelli for Suarez?

Andy Carrol for Fernando Torres?

We’ve signed some other really shitty players but not always as a clear and direct replacement for a departing star.

Add Mignolet for Reina to that list too

Rachid Ghezzal for Riyad Mahrez. I want to think Maddison was the actual replacement though.

Replacing Lukaku with literally nobody wasn't our best move.

It's hard to isolate too many direct replacements when you haven't had that many star players in recent memory. God we're shit.

Poulsen for Mascherano

I thought about Poulsen. But I thought the logic at the time was that Lucas was effectively the replacement for masch.

I think Poulsen was signed earlier in the summer although I think he probably was the Mascherano replacement because Liverpool knew he was going that window. We also signed Meireles around the time Mascherano went. Two different types of midfielders though obviously.

Meireles was way better out wide for us than he ever was as a central midfielder.

Yeah I remember him being decent there after Dalglish came in.
